Yueh-Ching Chou is a researcher, practitioner, and activist advocating for the independent living of disabled people in the community. Her research aligns with the disability movement and involves collaboration with disabled people’s organizations (DPOs). She uses an inclusive and emancipatory approach, empowering disabled people in influential roles.
Her research work addresses the sexual rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), the reconciliation of paid work with unpaid caregiving for mothers of children with IDD, and disabled people who use personal assistance for independent living, including those supported by live-in migrant care workers. She has also collected life stories of people with IDD and explored the unmet support needs of disabled people. Recently, in collaboration with disabled activists and researchers from Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, she co-authored an article titled “Accessing Disability Rights in Four Asian Countries: The Perspectives of Disabled People on Physical, Attitudinal, and Cultural Barriers,” published in Political Geography (2024).
